The two great passions in John Christie’s life were opera and a beautiful young soprano, Audrey Mildmay, with whom he was completely smitten. Together with his formidable drive, they fuelled what many first saw as a monumental folly in the South Downs. Glyndebourne was triumphantly born amidst stiff manhattans, rolling lawns and the sound of sheep from across the HaHa. It was to become revered the world over.
Such was the scale of the enterprise that love alone was not enough. When a famous violinist was fogged in overnight in Eastbourne, Christie first heard of a group of refugees for whom life in Nazi Germany had become impossible. Perhaps they could help deliver Christie’s vision of the sublime – assuming of course they would be willing to cast Audrey as the leading light.
David Hare’s new play, first seen at Hampstead Theatre in 2015, is the story of an intense love affair and the unrelenting search for artistic excellence in the face of searing scrutiny, sacrifice and the impending Second World War.

The nearest Tube stations are Leicester Square (Northern and Piccadilly lines) and Charing Cross (Bakerloo and Northern lines).
Leicester Square: From the station head north up Charing Cross Road and take the first right onto Long Acre. When the road intersects with Upper St. Martin's Lane turn left. The theatre is a two minute walk away down the road.
Charing Cross: See the directions in the 'Train' section above.
Bus: There are plenty of buses operating in this area.
For the Strand take buses: 6, 9, 11, 15, 23, 91 and 139.
For Charing Cross take the 24, 29, 47, 176.

Great story..wonderful actors

I attended with a friend disinterested in the story and really not a willing participant in the evening. He was the one who came out of the theatre thrilled by every aspect! A wonderful night out in the west end.

Excellent acting. Brilliant 2nd act. Loved the typically English sets. Just one minor criticism :Fritz and Karl spoke with (too) perfect English accents considering their origins.

As the daughter of a german jewish mother who fled to England in 1935 I was very emotionally involved in thepai of exile. I found the play gripping but also flat. The german exiles spoke and behaved like actors in a drawing room drama.There was little evocation of the sense of loss of the sophisticated German culture that limited their achievements in England.
