Brief Encounter

Directed by Emma Rice, Brief Encounter plays live on stage at the Empire Cinema in London’s West End.

One of the most haunting love stories ever, Noel Coward’s Brief Encounter has won the hearts of audiences and critics alike.

Now, catch the award-winning Kneehigh production, a triumph in the West End that has toured the globe and opened on Broadway to dazzling reviews.

Jim Sturgeon plays Alec, with Isabel Pollen as Laura, and Lucy Thackeray as Myrtle. The cast also features Beverly Rudd as Beryl, Jos Slovick as Stanley, and Dean Nolan as Fred/Albert. Katrina Kleve and Peter Dukes also appear in this delightful staging produced by The Old Vic, David Pugh, Dafydd Rogers, and Jenny and Steve Wiener.

Emma Rice’s staging of Noël Coward’s screenplay is a total delight. Moving, funny, gripping and even at its most inventive, true to the original and its all-English heart.” - The Times

Surely the most enchanting work of stagecraft ever inspired by a movie.” - The New York Times

Funny and entertaining evening. Super cast and great old music. The lovely old story mixed in with some interesting characters. Finished by 2110 so good for a working night too. Would recommend it to friends.

  • A fun filled, emotional ride

A wonderfully enjoyable and inventive show. Laughter, tears, funny walks and striking images a-plenty. Moments of pure silliness juxtaposed with moments of tender emotion. Beautifully stage and performed with some cracking good music throughout. A delightful night at the theatre.

  • Fun evening

    24 May 2018

Really a feel good experience, from the cast chatting before the show to the music, dance, comedy and fun effects. It captured the atmosphere of the time beautifully and the way people were so formal with each other. The majority of the cast could sing, dance and play instruments. So multitalented with perfect comic timing. Dean Nolan was particularly impressive and my favourite in an excellent cast.
