Inspired by a true story, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is the hit musical for today.
Jamie New is sixteen and lives on a council estate in Sheffield. Jamie doesn’t quite fit in.
Jamie is terrified about the future. He is going to be a sensation.
Supported by his brilliant loving mum and surrounded by his friends, Jamie overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies and steps out of the darkness, into the spotlight.
Layton Williams, Melissa Jacques, Sejal Keshwala and Sabrina Sandhu are joined by EastEnders’ star Rita Simons as Miss Hedge with Phil Nichol returning to play Hugo/Loco Chanelle. They lead a twenty-five strong company and a nine-piece band that will ‘sweep you away on a tide of mischief, warmth and exuberance’ (Financial Times).
With ‘songs that have the wow factor’ (The Times) by lead singer-songwriter of The Feeling, Dan Gillespie Sells, and ‘hilarious’ book and lyrics ‘with delightful punch’ (Whatsonstage), by writer Tom MacRae, this funny, fabulous, feel-good, musical sensation has been wowing audiences and critics alike.

The acting and music were fantastic. A brave attempt at tackling a difficult subject. However the lead character is encouraged to become himself by his mother, and yet, he is then taught to invent a new personality on stage. I left after the first act but would say judge it by viewing it yourself.

Some fun moments but overall a bit lacklustre

A sweet story that had a lot of potential, however I felt there was a lack of context with some of the storylines (careers teacher). The ensemble cast was good but felt very 'stage school'. The main character was adorable and endearing and quite loveable however I felt the actor portraying him didn't command the level of centre stage presence required for this role. His voice, while technically good, didnt have the projection one would expect from the lead. The standout performance for me was the mother. The actress really did this character justice and gave a strong emotive performance. Had me in tears at one point. She also had a belter of a voice.

For this is the story of a 16-year-old boy named Jamie New, with giraffe legs and a magnetic smile, whose career adviser at his rough school in Sheffield has a message.
