Film4 Summer Screen: The Piano (cert 15)

Ada (Holly Hunter), a mute Scottish widow, arrives on the shores of New Zealand with her nine year-old daughter (Anna Paquin) and treasured piano to enter into an arranged marriage with a plainsman (Sam Neill).

The inhospitable land, loveless relationship and unexpected attentions of a local man (Harvey Keitel) unleash a turbulent passion within Ada that cannot be quelled. Campion’s film has the feel of a dark folk tale, illuminated by rapturous, unforgettable images and Michael Nyman’s swirling, spellbinding score.

Oscar winners Hunter and Paquin are twin forces of nature as mother and daughter, their Academy Awards adding to a pile of prizes the film accumulated, including the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, with Campion becoming only the second woman to be nominated for the Best Director Oscar.

From its opening shot to the last frame, The Piano is a masterpiece of cinema that demands to be experienced on a big screen.

What should I bring?

Audiences are welcome to bring their own blankets, small cushions and backrests to sit on.

You can also pre order a blanket and backrest package at the same time as purchasing tickets, to collect at the venue on the night. These are yours to keep after the event.

Alternatively, blankets, backrests and cushions can be purchased on-site for £5.00–£15.00.

For this year there will be a very limited number of seats available for audience members who would prefer a seat. Seats are unallocated and situated at the rear of the courtyard. Audiences should be aware that unless they purchase the seated option for an extra £5 when buying their ticket for the screening, there are no other seats available in the courtyard; chairs, large items or portable furniture, inflatable or otherwise are not allowed. There is no cloakroom onsite.

Weather

The screenings are open air. The audience area is not covered. The screenings will go ahead whatever the weather – come rain or come shine. Please come prepared as no wet weather provisions will be provided.

There are also a range of hampers and dining packages that can be pre-booked via the  Somerset House website

You're welcome to bring your own food and drink, but no glass (including jars), crockery or sharp knives are allowed into the courtyard. Customers are welcome to bring alcohol onto the site, but we reserve the right to use our discretion, and may confiscate anything deemed excessive.
