Film4 Summer Screen: Before Sunrise & Before Sunset (cert 15)

Embark on a romantic night under the stars as we go city-hopping and time-travelling with one of cinema’s most iconic couples – Celine and Jesse, as played by Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke.

On this particular evening we’re only taking you on the first two trips from Richard Linklater (Oscar-nominated director of Boyhood), embarking on a whirlwind affair that will finish around midnight.

In Before Sunrise, Celine and Jesse meet on a train and spend a night together in Vienna, where they get to know one another and experience the first flush of love. In Before Sunset, both shot and set almost ten years later, the pair meet again in Paris, where their bond deepens.

These wistful, funny, philosophical and intimate encounters – in which the characters talk, tease and reveal their hopes and fears – play out against beautiful, historical urban backdrops, making the courtyard of Somerset House feel like both a real-life location and one more fixed point on a map of the human heart.
