Film4 Summer Screen: Gods Own Country (cert 15)

Local lad Johnny (Josh O’Connor, soon to be Prince Charles in The Crown) and Romanian migrant Gheorghe (Alec Secareanu), tend to the land and look after the sheep during lambing season, forging a closeness that gradually leads to love and mutual deep-rooted changes that help each of them come to terms with their place in the world.

Director Francis Lee delivers one of the great debut films of recent years, ensuring we experience the raw elements and turbulent emotions that roil throughout the film. It helps that he has two such fine actors as O’Connor and Secareanu, who eloquently express everything they feel even when words fail them.

For all its independence and individualism, this is at heart a story that’s easy to fall for; Lee draws on films as unlikely as An Officer and a Gentleman, The Bridges of Madison County and Working Girl to create a classic, timeless and ultimately simple love story.

Audio-described headsets are available for this screening. If you would like to request a headset, please contact the Box Office.

For this year there will be a very limited number of seats available for audience members who would prefer a seat. Seats are unallocated and situated at the rear of the courtyard.
