The best play I have seen for ages. Humour, tragedy . politics , relationship complexities and a fascinating insight into the Irish troubles. The acting was brilliant and loved the little extra live surprises ! Strongly recommended.

Best acting that I have seen in a long time. Great to see a modern play based on the recent history of Northern Ireland presented in an accessible and interesting way - a long play, but you will not notice the time going by.

Very moving account of the tragedies within an Irish family during 1981. Secrets and the conflicting loyalties and emotions thrust upon the family, threaten to tear their worlds apart. Sad, and some times funny, deeply thought provoking, and a message that we should all learn from history. Excellent multi talented cast, very good child performers, and the best ever dancing baby.

The drama kept building throughout this performance and the ending was fabulous. The performances were all excellent and the children particularly stood out. There is quite a lot of strong swearing, but I feel it was in keeping with the drama. The performance did not feel as long as it was, which is a compliment to the acting and direction. I would gladly watch this again. Highly recommended.

Some laughs and lots of drama. Cute baby and excellent acting from the goose! A serious subject sensitively handled. The script switched from fast paced and entertaining to poignant and tense and the best lines were shared between the cast.

From row F in the Dress Circle it was difficult to hear, particularly the children who were unable to project their voices in the way the adults were. The problem was compounded by the strong Irish accents.

Powerful, excellent actimgbaudience enthralled. Negatives, hard to understand (In a little hard of hearing) plus excessive use of f word and one can't help feeling that if they all drank less, theyd spend less time at each other's throats.

I thought this play was over-rated, despite excellent performances. The family set-up seemed cliched and somewhat sentimental- the small children and animals predictably getting the 'Aahs!' from the audience.
Our seats were at the back of the stalls (Row V) and it was extremely difficult to hear. A great pity since the family relationships were for some while hard to understand.
A disappointing and over-priced evening.

Beautifully written and directed, this long play manages to be absorbing and convincing throughout. It runs the gamut of emotions through fear via menace to black humour, love, sorrow and revenge, with a backdrop of the dreadful situation in Northern Ireland around the time of the hunger strikers while Margaret Thatcher was prime minister. I am not a culture buff and I rarely go to the theatre but this was recommended and I am very pleased to have seen it.

The ferryman was a powerful and moving piece of story telling. The performances were heart wrenching, full of humour and despair. The talent of the younger members of the cast was a revelation too. There were a lot of characters to follow and it took a while to work out the dynamics and relationships but the strength and power of the script drew me in and I was not aware of how much time had passed. It gave a harsh and bleak reflection of Ireland in the 1980s and how conflict can tear a family apart. It kept me guessing the whole time and the longing and tension between the two main protagonists was felt through out. I would certainly recommend this play.

This play is not for the faint hearted. It’s gritty, dramatic, sad, funny and poignant. The acting is superb - how those actors put in such effort every night must be emotionally exhausting. A fabulous night out.

We were rivetted by the power and sense of the always threatened and fateful doom.
The classical allusions and setting of the play together with the occasional parallels to Lear and, indeed, Lughnasa, gave depth and sense of timelessness to the theme and the tragic position of the protagonists.
It was remarkable to see a London audience so fulsomely deliver a standing ovation for a play and production which so sharply recalls a painful recent period in the mutual history of these islands.

Without wanting to denigrate the effort and skill that went into this production, which was clearly aimed at a theatre-going generation too young to remember the 'Troubles', I fully agree with Sean O'Hagan that it rings false all the time.
It relies on stereotyped characters and imagined scenarios of a kind likely to appeal to an English public. One longs for some verisimilitude, and in the end I was longing for the curtain to fall! So was my equally half-Irish sister who watched the play with me.

I had to work out from visual clues what was going on. In the first scene a priest was being interrogated, so I assumed that Protestants had the upper hand in that scene. I never worked out the family relationships of the main Catholic family - see below.

I'm not a regular theatre goer. I was blown away by the authenticity of the play. The dialogue, set, lighting and careful direction were all brilliant. The characters and story line felt very real and the experience was intimate.
The child actors were absolutely amazing and it was clear that the adult actors were skilled in enabling them to perform so naturally.
